Bacillus coagulans reaches the small intestine without being damaged by the highly acidic environment of the stomach. In the favorable environment of the small intestine, it becomes active and ferments carbohydrates to produce lactic acid. A study from Japan also provides evidence that Bacillus coagulans SANK 70258 can reach the small intestine unaffected by gastric acid at pH 1.2, that more than about 70% of the bacteria can remain alive even after 3 years of storage at 37°C, and that it remains alive and effective in hard capsule form even at 40°C.
